Their wings rise against the soft blue-grey background of The Ledge, part of the 650 mile Niagara Escarpment that passes through New York, Ontario, Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois. The limestone and dolomite ridge that forms the cliff at Niagara Falls extends in an arc, shaping the Door County Peninsula and the eastern borders of Lake Winnebago and Horicon Marsh—the largest cattail marsh in the world
Trumpeter Swans are one of many species of birds that were previously listed as Endangered but have recovered greatly thanks to preservation of critical habitat along the Flyway such as the marshes and wetlands at Horicon.
The Swans are the main subject that catches the eye in this image. The observer’s eye quickly takes in the amount of space filled by the trees and grasses. The haze in the air establishes depth in the scene while softening the background, which allows the Swans to stand out. Yet, the amount of space the Ledge occupies makes it clear it is an important part of the story here.
The soft palette and the expanse covered by this scene suggests a large reproduction of this image (43”x21” or larger) on matte finished fine art paper with light texture would anchor a space nicely in any living room, office, study, or hallway.
